Kondoh's Morning Glories Page
The most popular morning glories in Japan are Ipomoea nil (Japanese morning glory).
They are called "ASAGAO" in Japan, and it mean morning face.
Ipomoea nil were introduced from China as a medicine in the 8th century.
The original flowers were small and blue, and their seeds were used as
a laxative.
The first mutation was a white flower. Many mutations occurred after the
18th century.
Now, Japanese morning glories has a large number of mutations.
My Morning Glories in 2004
*Following flowers are my morning glories in 2004.
'Sunrise Serenade': Ipomoea purpures
I bought this flower as imported seeds at flower shop.
The flower is semi-double and same as feathered corolla type in 2000.
This plant show beautiful deep red flowers.
'Sapphire Vine': Jacquemontia violacea
This plant is not Ipomoea, but it is climber and flowers looks same.
Flowers are about 2cm in diameter and it is well blooming perennial plant.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get seeds because it doesn't produce seeds by
self-pollination and it withered in winter.
Convolvulus cantabrica
I got this flower as a young plant.
It is strong perennial and not withered in the winter of 2004.
This flowers are also small, but very pretty.
